چکیده

In the forecasting of binary events, verification measures that are ‘‘equitable’’ were defined by Gandin and Murphy to satisfy two requirements: 1) they award all random forecasting systems, including those that always issue the same forecast, the same expected score (typically zero), and 2) they are expressible as the linear weighted sum of the elements of the contingency table, where the weights are independent of the entries in the table, apart from the base rate. The authors demonstrate that the widely used ‘‘equitable threat score’’ (ETS), as well as numerous others, satisfies neither of these requirements and only satisfies the first requirement in the limit of an infinite sample size. Such measures are referred to as ‘‘asymptotically equitable.’’ In the case of ETS, the expected score of a random forecasting system is always positive and only falls below 0.01 when the number of samples is greater than around 30. Two other asymptotically equitable measures are the odds ratio skill score and the symmetric extreme dependency score, which are more strongly inequitable than ETS, particularly for rare events; for example, when the base rate is 2% and the sample size is 1000, random but unbiased forecasting systems yield an expected score of around 20.5, reducing in magnitude to 20.01 or smaller only for sample sizes exceeding 25 000. This presents a problem since these nonlinear measures have other desirable properties, in particular being reliable indicators of skill for rare events (provided that the sample size is large enough). A potential way to reconcile these properties with equitability is to recognize that Gandin and Murphy’s two requirements are independent, and the second can be safely discarded without losing the key advantages of equitability that are embodied in the first. This enables inequitable and asymptotically equitable measures to be scaled to make them equitable, while retaining their nonlinearity and other properties such as being reliable indicators of skill for rare events. It also opens up the possibility of designing new equitable verification measures.

On the Uniqueness of Gandin and Murphy's Equitable Performance Measures

Gandin and Murphy have shown that if a skill score is linear in the scoring matrix, and if the scoring matrix is symmetric, then in the 2-event case there exists a unique, \equitable" skill score, namely the True Skill Score (or Kuipers' performance index). As such, this measure is treated as preferable to other measures because of its equitability. However, in most practical situations the sco...

Graphs and Degree Equitability

Let be a graph. If  , G V E    is a function from the vertex set   V G to the set of positive integers. Then two vertices are   G , u v V   -equitable if     1 u v     . By the degree, equitable adjacency between vertices can be redefine almost all of the variants of the graphs. In this paper we study the degree equitability of the graph by defining equitable connectivity, equ...

Equitability Analysis of the Maximal Information Coefficient, with Comparisons

A measure of dependence is said to be equitable if it gives similar scores to equally noisy relationships of different types. Equitability is important in data exploration when the goal is to identify a relatively small set of strongest associations within a dataset as opposed to finding as many non-zero associations as possible, which often are too many to sift through. Thus an equitable stati...

Cake Cutting: Equitable Simple Allocations of Heterogeneous Goods

Cake cutting, a subfield of fair division, refers to the allocation of a heterogeneous, divisible, and continuous good among n players who have heterogeneous preferences. The challenge is to allocate the cake in such a way that is fair by using a procedure that encourages the players to be truthful about their preferences. There are several different notions of fairness studied in the literatur...

A Robust-Equitable Measure for Feature Ranking and Selection

In many applications, not all the features used to represent data samples are important. Often only a few features are relevant for the prediction task. The choice of dependence measures often affect the final result of many feature selection methods. To select features that have complex nonlinear relationships with the response variable, the dependence measure should be equitable, a concept pr...
